Facial fat transfer
Autologous fat transfer (AFT) is a frequently used procedure for volume restoration in the aging face. It can be used as a stand alone procedure or, more frequently, in conjunction with a surgical Eyelid, Midface or Lower Face Lift.
The technique involves harvesting the patient’s own fat from areas where it is found in excess using special liposuction techniques and injecting the fat with very fine and precise micro-cannulas in areas of the face where volume was lost through aging. There are 3 main types of fat that can be harvested and injected: Mili, Micro and Nano-fat. The appropriate fat injection technique is selected based on each patient’s needs for facial volume restoration and overall rejuvenation.
There is typically no change in volume or shape seen at the harvesting site because the volumes used for AFT are very small compared to those of standard liposuction for body contouring.
Typically one to two sessions of AFT, 6-8 months apart, are necessary to achieve the desired volume because fat retention depends not only on the technique used but also on the body’s own capacity to retain and integrate the new fat. A slight over-fill of 20-30 % is typically used to account for the immediate, post-operative loss of some of the injected fat cells.
Although noting is permanent and the aging process continues, the effect of AFT is long lasting. The rejuvenating effect of the fat Stem Cells can last for decades and, in fact, it improves over time. This can be appreciated not only in the facial volume but also in the skin texture, which is significantly improved under the influence of the fat stem cells.
Combining autologous fat injections with PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma), the overall rejuvenating effect is significantly enhanced.
