What you should know about Kybella
Kybella (Deoxycholic acid) is a natural detergent, also produced in our body by the liver, that is widely used today as a safe and effective non-surgical procedure for fat removal. This is a 10 min office procedure that involves injecting the laboratory synthesized deoxycholic acid in the area of fat excess, typically the double chin. The injections are not painful, however a burning sensation can be experienced for the first 5-10 minutes after injection. This is immediately alleviated by the application of ice.
How many treatments do I need?
Typically between 2 and 4 treatments, 4-6 weeks apart are required to achieve the desired result.
When do I see the final result?
Although tightening is seen as early as 6 weeks after the first treatment, the final result is usually seen at 6-8 months, as the skin continues to tighten while the fat cells are being removed by the body.
How long does it last?
Kybella results are permanent! The fat cells that are destroyed by the deoxycholic acid are not replaced by the body, similar to liposuction. The advantage of Kybella is that it can be done in the office with minimal or no downtime.
What is the downtime after Kybella?
There is typically some swelling under the chin for the first week after the injection. However this is more of a sensation than an actual esthetic problem. Mild bruising and tenderness can also be experienced over the first week after the injection.
What are the side effects of using Kybella?
Because Kybella is similar to the Deoxycholic acid produced by our liver, allergic reactions are rare. Mild nerve tingling or impairment have beed reported when large doses are used in one session but these are usually reversible.
